Vin de Pays

The French wine naming system is based on Vins de Table, now called Vins sans Indication Géographique (VSIG), and at its apex are Appellations d'Origine (AOC or AOP). Between the two are Vins de Pays, now named Indications Géographiques Protégées or IGP, characterized by broad geographical boundaries and relatively flexible production rules. These are the equivalent of PGIs at the European level.
