Rhône Valley Vineyards

Single varietal

Refers to a white, rosé, or red wine made from a single grape variety. A single-varietal wine is not "better" than a blended wine—nor vice versa. They are simply different.
In the Rhône Valley, each appellation regulates the scope of the wine producers' use of one or more grape varieties (based on viticultural, historical, and traditional criteria). Some appellations, by tradition as much as by choice, have positioned themselves in the production of single-varietal wines, while others cultivate the art of blending. In the Rhône Valley, single-varietal wines are rare, but they do exist, for example most of the red wines of the Northern Rhône, such as Cornas, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie... and in Condrieu for whites.
