French pyramid of wine denominations in France

There are two main categories of wines:

• Wines with a geographical indication (AOC / AOP or PDO - Protected Designation of Origin - and IGP or PGI - Protected Geographical Indication)
• Wines without a geographical indication (VSIG, sometimes labeled as Vin de France or Vin Mousseux in the case of sparkling wines)
